OPAL- Outdoor Play and Learning- SSW Way to Play

We are an OPAL school!

What play means for children at St Swithun Wells

At St Swithun Wells, play is a purposeful and essential part of school life that reflects our Catholic ethos and commitment to the development of the whole child. Through play, children are supported to:

  • Flourish as unique individuals created in the image of God
  • Develop independence, leadership, creativity, and problem-solving skills
  • Build confidence, resilience, and strong social relationships
  • Make choices and take responsibility for their actions
  • Develop emotional regulation and positive behaviour

In line with our Mission Statement and school values of Appreciation, Respect, Resilience, Belief, Honesty, and Tolerance, play provides daily opportunities for children to live out these values in action. Children learn to cooperate, resolve conflict, and treat others with dignity and respect.

Play supports our vision of a caring, inclusive school community where every child is encouraged and supported to achieve their full potential.

We believe that high-quality play experiences contribute significantly to children’s behaviour and attitudes, helping them to develop self-regulation, empathy, and responsibility. In addition, high-quality outdoor play supports wellbeing, ensuring children are active, engaged, and ready to learn.
