Our school’s overall values of Appreciation, Respect, Resilience, Belief, Honesty and Tolerance are underpinned by our statutory duties under the Equality Act 2010. We are dedicated to ensuring that every pupil receives an education that offers them the best chance at fulfilling their potential, and to promoting mental wellbeing amongst our pupils.
At St Swithun Wells’, we believe that diversity is a strength, which should be respected and celebrated by all those who learn, teach and visit here.
At St Swithun Wells’ Catholic primary school, we are committed to ensuring equality of education and opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents and carers receiving services from the school, who share a protected characteristic and those who do no share it;
• Age
• Disability
• Race
• Sex
• Gender reassignment
• Maternity and pregnancy
• Religion and belief
• Sexual orientation
• Marriage and civil partnership
We aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which all those connected to the school feel proud of their identity and able to participate fully in school life.
We aim to foster good relations across all characteristics – between people who share all that are protected.
Black History celebrations- launch this month (October is National Black History Month) however, for us, this is a continuous focus throughout the year. The theme for this year is Reclaiming Narratives- revisiting history; it’s about taking ownership of the stories that define our culture, our contributions, and our very identity. It’s a call to action for Black communities across the UK to step into the role of storytellers, historians, and custodians of our heritage.
As a school we will be focusing on celebrating diversity of our Saints, celebrating different cultures and also world religions
One World Celebration- A celebration of culture and world religions. This will take place on Thursday 28th November 9.30am-11.30am. Children and staff to come dressed in traditional dress or in celebration of their country of heritage. We will also encourage our children to dress in celebration of other countries and cultures around the world. The children will also bring in food from around the world and decorations to put around tables in the hall. Parents to attend
Black History- Saluting our Sisters
This month is a National celebration of Black History. This year the focus is about Black and Mixed Heritage Women - 'Saluting our Sisters'
Recognising and celebrating the contributions of Black and Mixed Heritage women is a great way to honour their achievements and highlight their impact on our society (past and present).
Celebrating and raising awareness of Black History should not just be during the month of October, but all year round.
At St Swithun Wells, this is the second year of our focus on Racial Justice, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion so this national month of celebration is another opportunity to educate ourselves and our children. Across the school, all classes will focus on a theme related to Black History and Culture and complete associated learning in class and at home. It is a further opportunity to learn about the inspiring stories of Black and Mixed Heritage women who have made significant contributions in various fields such as politics, science, arts, literature, and social justice. Their accomplishments can serve as a source of inspiration and empowerment for people of all backgrounds.
By fostering a culture of inclusivity and embracing diversity, we can play a crucial role in shaping future generations that are respectful, empathetic, and appreciative of the multifaceted nature of the world we live in.
